The day before Halloween 1938 the Mercury Theater on the Air decided they would like to make there broadcast more scary to fit the mood. so they decided to air the War of the Worlds but it was an altered version of the story and was presented as it would sound if it was a news broadcast. the show lasted 60 minutes and at the beginning they told all there listeners that the Mercury Theater on the Air was hosting the event but a sum of 1.7 million listeners didn't hear that part and tuned in later so they thought that it was a real broadcast and that the town of Grover's Mill, New Jersey was being attacked by martians with deadly gas. This caused both fear and excitement because while some were trying to get out of New Jersey as fast as possible others were headed there to get a look at the aliens. people reported that they could see the lights of the space ships in the distance and could smell the deadly gas. A few people saw a farmers water tank and thought it was a martian killing machine so the shot it repeatedly until a cop came out to tell them that it was fake. There were people held up in churches waiting for the end and some people just got out fast by committing suicide. also i had to change that font color to red because it was putting these weird white lines everywhere.
